Our History

1995

AIMAC Electronics Limited (2010) of Christchurch, New Zealand, was originally established in 1995 as AIMAC Electronic Servicing (incorporating TechMobility). Run by Alistair and Joy McGregor, who had previously owned the Bernina sewing shop in Timaru.

As such we are an experienced team who specialise in the electronics repair of impaired/ limited mobility scooters, power chairs and electric wheelchairs, this expanded to a range of disability support, including lift beds.

Training with Penny and Giles/ Curtis Wright chairs became integral with our ability to service and repair electronic wheelchair handsets, joysticks and controllers from simple mobility scooters to the full on chairs for multiple disability clients. This in turn was partnered with medical beds, hoists, lifts and other mobility aides for hospitals and rest homes alike.

2010’s

In 2010, Alistair looked at retiring and passing the business on to his son Michael and his new wife Sarah.

AIMAC Electronics Limited had a long involvement maintaining the Christchurch Districts Court’s sound and recording infrastructure before the 2011 Earthquakes. Including maintenance of cablingamplifiers, Lanier recorders, and various other audio-visual equipment.

Businesses we serviced included Bunnings Paint Machines, ColourSpec paint machines and a strong relationship with DHB’s, Essential Healthcare, and most other Mobility specialists around NZ.

However, since the Christchurch earthquakes in 2011 this has no longer been required as the courts have been rebuilt. Also work for many community service groups ceased, as they relocated with new equipment, new contracts and new personal who did know of our past relationships. A new ‘normal was needed for us as well. At this time, because the skill set was more towards electronic circuit boards, we started to diversify and expand our services to include beauty, therapeutic and aesthetic equipment repairs.

For several years we had a strong partnership with More Mobility and consequently MobyTech as their repairs workshop – however, as our visions started to move in different directions, we parted ways from a formal relationship to a casual one.

Surgical Lights

Tattoo machines and Tattoo removal lasers, specialist laser and cryo machines – massage beds and tables, started to come through our doors. This expanded to include medical and surgical lights and related products. Partnership with Denyers has continued to keep us busy at the local hospitals. However our core work became the repair of bespoke and interesting electronics such as mini cars, ball catchers and even bespoke golf chariots!

After several moves for the workshop – we finally decided to move out of leased premises and into the garage attached to the McGregor family home.

This was very fortunate, as the global pandemic of Covid 19 started to hit hard and NZ went through full lockdowns – not having to pay a lease saved us from going under – as was the fate of many small businesses during this time.

2020’s

Vintage Disney lights

2020 onwards, and post-covid, with everyone staying home and the economic impact on households, our repair offerings branched out into remote control and spa circuit board repairs and even Christmas ornament repairs!

To more and more AV equipment – Amplifiers, record players, CD/DVD, subwoofers, party boxes, speakers, media players and radios -with many Bluetooth conversions of heirloom or vintage items.

With ‘coming home’ we even had to get a container to store all the parts and equipment!

Golf cart/ trolley/ trundler repair also became a big part of our service offering – as we were MGI authorised repairers.

In 2021, we were happy to start partnering and training with Pathfinders Ltd, who supply fabric cutters and plotters around Australasia. This took our staff to Melbourne and Perth in Australia during 2022 and Fiji, Auckland and Palmerston North in 2023.

2025

We decided to slow down and move into semi-retirement by relocating to North Canterbury. Maintaining a small workshop location in Christchurch, whilst encouraging more work to arrive by courier.

Our main clients did not want to loose us, so many trips into Christchurch will continue for a while yet – without having to be present in a workshop every day.
